First Mods (S550)

We often chat to new Mustang owners, or maybe people who’ve owned them as standard for a little while and decide they want to dip a toe in the world of modifying and here at Modurstang its what we’re all about, from first mods to race cars. We can help you out.

We often find that people in this situation have had a look at some suppliers, scrolled ebay and a few facebook groups and are a bit lost or had some questionable advice from the internet.

A few of these conversations has lead us to write this blog post and to hopefully keep it updated and perhaps add a few sequels to it.

BMR Cradle bushing lock out kit (CB005)

Many people when they start driving the S550 in a more spirited way notice movement in the back end, some people describe it as a vague feeling and also notice wheel hop. This is caused by movement in the rubber bushes that mount the rear subframe. BMR have developed a solution to reduce this. They say-

“BMR Suspensions CB005 Cradle Bushing Lockout Kit is the only part you need to affordably and effectively lessen wheel hop, bushing deflection, and cradle movement. Throughout testing, BMR has seen about an 80%-90% reduction in fore/aft and lateral cradle bushing deflection.”

This is a fairly inexpensive modification and doesnt take long. For an extra cost saving it can be combined with other work mentioned below, such as lowering springs.

For a full description of the kit and its benefits, check out the vid below from BMR.

Lowering springs

There are many benefits manufacturers list for lowering springs, including centre of gravity optimisation, improved cornering etc. etc. For most people the biggest draw of them is it looks cool to have the car a bit lower, most kits lower the car about 25mm and on standard diameter wheels thats about right to line up the axis of the wheel and arch to look just right. There are many kits available, we like the Pedders kit. While margianlly stiffer than OEM to suit the reduced travel they are still a comfortable road ride and are well matched to the standard dampers.

Wheel Spacers

Once you’ve lowered the car its noticable that the wheels sit inboard of the arches a reasonable amount. By adding wheelspacers the outer edge of the wheels are brought out in line with the arches to give a more muscular look. There are some potential handling improvements by widening the track width however its really about the looks.

H-Pipe

The S550 exhaust has a “central resonator”, its a fairly weighty silencer box under the car, roughly inline with the handbrake/ cup holder area.

By removing this and replacing it with a H pipe or X pipe you can add a bit more of a muscle car rumble or sports car howl (depending on H or X pipe) while not needing to spend out so much as a full cat back or even axle back exhaust.

For an idea of the effect of an H pipe check out this vid by one of our customers, Santiago.

Where will you start?

You could combine all of the above modifications into one Modurstang stance pack, or similar name I’ll try to think up (If you have a good suggestion for a name for this let me know, if it involves the word “stage”, don’t). This job would be under 3 hours and would transform your car and still be good value. Give us a call for current pricing and to get booked in!
